Writing is related to the themes taught in the classroom. Activities surrounding writing are tied to reading, so as to make the experience meaningful for pupils. At the lower primaries, pupils work on sentence making, vocabulary and linking sentences into paragraphs. They learn to recognise the structure within stories and produce pieces of writing with clear story structures. In the middle primaries, they progress on to vocabulary and content building. At the upper primary levels, pupils are exposed to various ways of introducing their writings, styles of writing and concluding effectively.

Comprehension is an integral part of language learning and goes hand in hand with reading and listening. Pupils are taught comprehension strategies after reading activities. Teachers model the comprehension skills through Think Aloud before leaving pupils to practise the skills on their own. Written activities are tied to comprehension lessons to cement pupils' ability to identify them within the texts they have be exposed to.

The department aims for pupils to be confident users of the language. Pupils not only need to be able to speak fluently but also to communicate their thoughts. Pupils develop their communication skills through real time interaction with their peers and teachers. Teachers provide the opportunities for pupils to practise the art of conversing though activities conducted in using the Cooperative Learning Strategies.

Pupils extend their learning beyond the texts through organised field trips & also through the use of mnipulatives. These trips encourage them to use their observation skills, apply taught information and get them to further explore a particular theme already learnt in class. The post-field trip cooperative learning lessons and simple experiments that they engage in reinforce the content as well as social skills that they need to master to be passionate and effective learners.

Organised as a post exam activity in May, the activities carried out were meaningful and effective for pupils' awareness and learning experience. English Ambassadors were appointed and each presented with a T-shirt as a form of identification. These are good models of spoken English in their classrooms.
