Habits of Mind

 Habits of Mind Programme  

In the journey of providing a holistic education, Changkat Primary School has embarked on a journey to cultivate good mental habits for the children to help them lead a more productive and fulfilling life.

In this modern world, intelligence is no longer defined by how much you know. It is about how you behave when you do not know the answer. Arthur Costa and Bena Kallick define and describe 16 types of intelligent behaviour that they call "habits of mind". Those habits of mind can help students and adults in school and in everyday life as they encounter problems, dilemmas, and enigmas, the resolution of which are not immediately known. The habits help to discipline the mind so that the person would know how to behave intelligently.

  • managing impulsivity
  • listening with understanding and empathy
  • thinking flexibly
  • thinking about thinking (metacognition)
  • striving for accuracy
  • questioning and posing problems
  • applying past knowledge to new situations

  • thinking and communicating with clarity and precision
  • gathering data through all senses
  • creating, imagining, innovating
  • responding with wonderment and awe
  • taking responsible risks
  • finding humour
  • thinking interdependently
  • remain open to continuously learning
