| Competition |
|
Students are more proactive in participating in the various inter-class and intra-cluster competitions and activities. This year, the inter-class competitions were held during the Malay Week in May. The following are the various competitions.
| School-Based Competitions |
| Berpantun / Poetry Recital |
| Menyanyi Sambil Beraksi / Singing |
| Berpantun / Poetry Recital |
| Bercerita / Story-Telling |
| Bina Kosa Kata / Vocabulary Building |
| Cakap Petah / Public Speaking |
| Main Peran / Role Playing |
Besides internal competitions, the Malay students have also participated in 2 external competitions. In the 3rd term, Nur Syahirah (6A) and Muhd Irsyad (5A) took part in an Essay Writing Competition. During the September holidays, Nurafiqa (4A) and Qarinah Aliah (4A) were sent to Woodlands Library to compete in the Eja Tepat (Spelling Bee) Competition. Although they didn't win the competition they were able to perform quite well.

| Programmes & Workshops |
|
| 3rd Language |
|
Besides conducting the yearly competitions, selected students are also involved in the 3rd Language Programme that has been running for 4 years now. Primary 3 students attended lessons for beginners conducted by Parent Volunteers (PIE Club members) during the 1st Semester. Whereas the primary 5 students, attended the intermediate lessons conducted by our own MT teachers in the 2nd semester. These lessons are conducted every Wednesday for 8-10 weeks. Resources (Teachers' Guide, Students' Activity Book & Powerpoint Slide) have been created by our own MT teachers, Mr Seah and Ms Iffah.
However, in 2008, the school has been chosen as one of the few to conduct the pilot programme for 3rd Language. Resources will be provided by MOE. Lessons will also be conducted by trainers from the MOE. Primary 3 and 4 students will be attending the lessons for approximately 10 hours. They will experience hands on activities and given the chance to converse in the various languages.

| Reading Mum Programme |
|
Cooperation by parents from the PIE Club has also contributed greatly in the success of the Malay Department. They played a major role in assisting the progress of identified students in primary one and two. These parents identified as Reading Mums taught students every Wednesday to spell and read Malay texts. Students who have attended theses classes have improved significantly in their class assessments.
|
| Creative Writing Workshop |
|
In July, EDN Media Pte Ltd conducted our first Creative Writing Workshop (Riang Ria Bersama Karya Minda Kreatif) for the primary 3 and 4 students. Workshops are held once a week for 9 sessions. In these workshops, students are guided on how to compose creative essays by using suitable idioms and beautiful phrases. Students are also introduced to the essential parts of creating a great piece of essay. Those who have attended these workshops have been able create better pieces.
|
| Motivational Talk by EDN |
|
The department together with EDN have also conducted a Motivational Talk for both students and parents in school. Almost 200 students from the primary 3, 4 and 5 attended the talk. Most find it interesting and they learnt various strategies to manage their time and be more proactive towards their learning.
|
Comprehension Workshop for Parents |
|
45 parents were invited to attend a comprehension workshop. The lesson was first introduced to the primary 6 students and they are able to answer the questions with the technic taught. The Malay teachers believe that it would be beneficial for parents to also learn the technic so that they could teach and learn together with their child at home. Parents who attended the workshop said that the workshop was useful. Due to positive response by the parents, the Malay department has decided to conduct a similar workshop for both primary 5 and 6 students in Term 1, 2008.

P3 Cultural Camp |
|
Traditional Malay songs and games have been taught occasionally during class. This would include congkak, batu seremban, bunga mangga making, silat and etc. The Malay culture (music, dance and customs) has been exposed to the students in stages too. Students have performed in school events such as Teachers' Day and Hari Raya Celebrations under the guidance of the capable Malay teachers themselves. In addition, primary three students are encouraged to attend a 2-day Cultural Camp in June. Basic values have also been included in the teaching of Civics and Moral Education (CME).

| Incorperating IT into Learning |
|
The Malay Department also recognises the importance of balancing both traditional and IT values. Hence, the Malay teachers have incorporated IT in the teaching of the Malay Language in classes and the computer labs. Students are also taught by their Malay teachers to surf the Internet for additional information on topics learnt in the textbook. Educational CD-ROMs are also provided to reinforce lessons taught in class. As mentioned above, the students are also instilled with the traditional Malay values.
Pupils were also trained to do presentations in various levels on topics taught in the syllabus. Teachers will evaluate their presentation and fellow peers will have a say in the final decision of the teachers. Pupils are given the chance to flaunt their IT skills and speaking ability in front of their peers. This will help prepare them for future competitions.
This year, the Malay Department had also collaborated with the English Seeds Department in various field trips such as going Around The Neighbourhood, Viewing the Airport and A Visit To The Zoo. The department hopes to collaborate with the other levels with regards to these field trips in future.
Even though these activities are important in engaging our students in their daily lessons, academically, we are sure the students will perform well in their recent PSLE. The department aims for 100% passes and 50% quality passes in every PSLE.
Thus, the department strives for the best for its students. With cooperation from the other departments in the school, PIE Club and parents, we believe that the department will continue to develop and provide the very best for its students.
